Jóan Petur

Bow & Arrow 2008

Hi Jóan, how are you?
I'm fine thank you.

Which instruments do you play?
I play the guitar and piano.

What made you decide to be a solo artist and not want to be in a band?
You can make all the decisions when you are a solo artist - it is easier.

Do you work with the same musicians when recording as you do when performing live?
Mostly yes, not always, and I do solo performances too.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t yet heard you?
I would describe it as singer/songwriter - pop.

What have you been up to recently?
I have just released a single called "In A Year" - which is co-written with the fantastic Marissa DiBlasio. We wrote it on the 5th annual international songwriter retreat in California january 2010.
We have made a music video too - it is on youtube. A friend of mine Eirikur Meitilberg has made the music video.

What can your fans look forward to in the next 12 months?
The plans are to make another single and in about a year I hopefully will release a complete album.

Did you always want to be in a musician/singer when younger?
I have always played music - started with piano lessons when I was 7 years old. So yes I have always wanted to do something with music.

What music did you listen to while growing up?
The best thing was to be home alone after school. I always went through my dad's old records of Jim Reeves, Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash.
Later I started to listen to Guns n' Roses, Mr. Big, Metallica etc.
And in my late teens I started to listen to more soft singer/songwriter music. I am still open to everything and listen to all music.

How long have you been involved with writing & performing music?
About 10 years.

Are you self-taught or did you have lessons?
I had piano lessons, but self-taught guitar player.

Do you have a set routine when writing and recording or does it depend on each track and the inspiration?
It's really never the same process. Sometimes I have the lyrics before the melody is ready, and the other way. Sometimes it starts with a beat. Sometimes I co-write.

Would you sign with a major record company?
Maybe - it would depend on many things...

How much involvement do you have with the arranging and production of the songs when recording?
I would say that I am involved allot in the recording/arranging/production process. I really like to arrange the music.

Is the production side of things something you’d like to get involved more in the future, maybe working with other artists?
Yes that is something I would like to. I have written some songs that have been used by other artists too. And I have some projects running where other artists will use my songs on their albums.

Do you find the process of recording enjoyable and does it get easier the more you do?
I find it very enjoyable now, but in the start it was terrible.

Do you try to capture your ‘live’ sound on recordings or do you think that the ‘live’ sound and recorded sound should be different experiences for your fans?
I do not try to capture the live sound, cause when I do gigs it's not that often that I have my full band with me.

Do you have any favourite tracks on your album?
On my album "Bow & Arrow" my favorite track is "In Our Little Town" but it never made it to any of the hit-lists. "Moments" is also a great song which made it to the #1 on some hit-lists - and that includes Somojo too.

Do you write songs/tracks only about personal experiences?
No I don't. My newest single is about a girl who is tired of living in a small town, and wants to move to the big city.

Do you find song writing easy or difficult?
It depends what mood I am in. But most of the time it is easy I would say.

Who are your favourite songwriters?
Bob Dylan, Damien Rice, John Mayer, Teitur (is also form the Faroe Islands) and a danish guy called Kim Larsen.

Which countries have you gigged in?
I have gigged in Faroe Islands, Denmark, Iceland, USA, Italy, Sweden.

Which countries would be at the top of your list to tour?
Germany, France, UK, and USA again.

How do you promote your music and get your music out to new fans?
I have 3 promotors that help me with that.

How do you relax?
I relax at home with my wife and my adorable daughter.
