Jimmy & The Sounds

Hi, how are you?
We are doing fine thanks how are you?

Would you mind introducing yourselves and telling us what instruments you play?
Me (james) and Anth sing and play guitar, Alistair on drums and Marc on bass.

How long has the current band line up been together?
We have been together now for just under two years

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t yet heard you?
We play songs to sing along to that get everybody up on the dancefloor

What have you been up to recently?
We have just had a couple of weeks off (which must be the first break we have had in the last two years), other than that lots of catching up with friends and family.

What can your fans look forward to in the next 12 months?
We have three single releases lined up for this year, a European tour, lots of really cool UK dates and lots of festivals in the summer.

How did you meet each other?
We all used to have the same girlfriend. One of us is still with her!

How did you come up with your name for the band?
It came to me in a dream one night....thats the last time i eat cheese before bed!
There is no real explanation for the name, we had gigs but no band name and randomly announced ourselves as Jimmy & the Sounds.

Did you always want to be in a band?
None of us could imagine doing anything else.

What music did you listen to while growing up?
Weve all had interesting musical upbringings, I guess this steers towards lots of different genres from folk to hip hop.

How long have you played your instruments?
Does anybody actually keep tabs on that?

What were your first music making experiences?
We were all in dreadful college bands....have you ever seen “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”

Are you self-taught or did you have lessons?
Were all self taught but have lots of friends that play and were always learning from different people.

What is your current equipment?
Orange, Schecter, Fender, Shine, Hartke, Sabian

If you had an unlimited equipment budget what would be on your shopping list?
We’d pocket the money and put it in the fruit machines.....then have to keep what we have, were happy with the gear we have already.

Do you use the same equipment live as you do when in a studio?
Everything on our records is what we play live.

Do you have a set routine when writing and recording or does it depend on each track and the inspiration?
We always write as a band, surprisingly enough we work best like this.....most bands find that really difficult.

Which software/recording process do you use?
We have a really close friend of the band who engineers and mixes our tracks. Protools is the weapon of choice.

Would you sign with a major record company?
Yes, the truth of the matter is, uncool or not, these companies have the ability to make or break bands. Their levels of promotion and outreach is far greater than what we can do for ourselves.....or we would just release all of our own records.

Do you have any new recordings planned?
We have just finished working in the studio before Christmas. We have lots planned for 2011!

How much involvement do you have with the arranging and production of the songs when recording?
We write, arrange and produce all of our own music.

How do you relax?
We only relax if Frankie says we can!

Jimmy & The Sounds

Is the production side of things something you’d like to get involved more in the future, maybe working with other artists?
We all really enjoy producing, it gives you chance to take a step back and look at your music from a different perspective. It would be fun working with other artists on this level, for sure!

Do you find the process of recording enjoyable and does it get easier the more you do?
We all love being in the studio, we never go into the studio to record tracks were not happy with. It is a constant battle when you have 4 perfectionists in a band together!

Do you try to capture your ‘live’ sound on recordings or do you think that the ‘live’ sound and recorded sound should be different experiences for your fans?
Surely you want the band to give you something different live from on record?

Who are the main songwriters for the band?
We all have varying levels of input in each track we create.

Do you have a method for writing songs?
Not really, a song can be built around a melody, beat, riff or the ramblings of a madman over the microphone (which usually involves James
experimenting with different accents)

Do you write songs only about personal experiences?
Our songs are about everyday life, things we hate, love and things we are unsure of. Isn’t that what music is all about? Everyone’s perception of this is different, our music is about whatever you want it to be about.

Do you find song writing easy or difficult?
Song writing can be both depending on what day of the week it is and the mood.

Is there anyone who you would like to collaborate with on writing songs or performing?
Shane McGowan, Jay-Z, PJ Harvey, The guy who writes all of the songs for Kings of Leon.....

Who are your favourite songwriters?
Far too many to list.

Which countries have you gigged in?
Germany, France, Romania, Austria, Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, England.....we once went to Peterlee...

Which countries would be at the top of your list to tour?
We will let you know after the tour in February!

Who would you like to tour with?
We’ve played with lots of great bands, we really have no preference.

How do you promote your music and get your music out to new fans?
Social Networks, Promotions, Gigs, Word of Mouth (this is the best form of promotion)

Do you think such sites and the internet are good tools for independent and unsigned artists?
We really wouldn’t like to say.

With all the various websites out there for independent and unsigned artists, is there still something that is missing from them that you think would benefit the lesser-known artists?
How much time do we have?

Have you ever entered any ‘battle of the bands’ competitions?
No, thanks. Were not above it or anything just don’t see the point.....isn’t that a bit like cock measuring at the urinals.

What’s your best/worst experience at a gig?
We enjoy every gig, sometimes the worst turn out to be the best and vice versa.

Do you get nervous before a gig? How do you calm down?
No, we are confident in our performance as a band, obviously we have worked extremely hard to get it to this level.

What are your day jobs if you have them?
We run a milk round between the four of us. Tesco are putting in some low blows at the moment!

Would you like to be full time working musicians or are you happy with things as they are?
We would love to do this full time, hopefully this happens for us.

Has your music been used on any film soundtracks?
Yes, a film called “Rising Tide” used a track of ours called “Sounds” which is due out this year. Exciting stuff!

Is there anything you’d like to add?
Have you heard of a popular technique endorsed by the Catholic is called “Pull and Pray”?
