Double A side single Galang/Little Sister out April 4th 2011
Hi Dana, how are you?
Fabulous! Give thanks…
What made you decide to be a solo artist and not want to be in a band?
I’ve been in bands before but democracy isn’t always the best option in this case. I lucked out because my band consists of my producer who is also my drummer so I didn’t need a “band” per se.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t yet heard you?
Sweaty, lust fuelled, guitar driven, fuzzed out high energy rock that makes you dance!
What music did you listen to while growing up?
Growing up in the Caribbean I didn’t hear a lot of the rock n roll I would later fall in love with, but I was exposed to a lot of American chart music as well as the omnipresent soca and reggae you would expect.
When was the ‘I want to do that!’ moment?
I’ve always been obsessed with guitar but the defining moment came when I saw Hole perform Violet at the 1995 VMAs. It changed my life. I knew I had to get an electric guitar and a distortion pedal!
What was the last music you put on your ipod or mp3 player?
Get some – Lykke Li
Satellite – The Kills
What have you been up to recently?
Getting everything ready for the single release! From Video shoots to sitting in on video edits for days on end to photo shoots, single artwork and endless admin!
What can your fans look forward to in the next 12 months?
A full length Album.
What is your current equipment?
A Fender Strat, Hot Rod Deluxe Fender amp, Shure beta 87 a, Shure beta 58a Super Duper, OCD and Digital delay.
Do you have a favourite piece of musical kit that you couldn’t live without?
I need all of it to create the sound I want but the definitive overdriven sound comes from my OCD. So if you twisted my arm, I’d say that!
If you had an unlimited equipment budget what would be on your shopping list?
Ooohhh so many things but the first thing that springs to mind is the UAD 2-610 Dual channel preamplifier. Purrrs*
Do you try to capture your ‘live’ sound on recordings or do you think that the ‘live’ sound and recorded sound should be different experiences for your fans?
I do try to make things sound as much like the record as possible but with that live energy firmly in place.
Do you find the process of recording enjoyable and does it get easier the more you do?
Yes I find it very enjoyable to get the song out of my head and into a tangible form.
Do you have any new recordings planned?
Which are your favourite original tracks?
Hmmm Shudder is one of my favourites but it is a bit like asking me which of my babies is my favourite.
And No I don’t have any actual babies.
Who are your favourite songwriters?
Too many to list… PJ Harvey she doesn’t disappoint!
Do you have a method for writing songs?
It depends on the inspiration but mostly I get a riff idea first, then come the chords, then the vocal melody and always last, the lyrics.
Do you find song writing easy or difficult?
Both. Some songs just fall out of you others take a lot of writing and re-writing
Is there anyone who you would like to collaborate with on writing songs or performing?
Lots of people! PJ Harvey, The Kills, M.I.A, Courtney Love to name a few.
Would you sign with a major record company?
If there is a major out there that would give me complete artistic freedom then yes but I think you might find that such a major doesn’t exist. We need a new Chris Blackwell!
Which countries would be at the top of your list to tour?
Beside the obvious UK/USA I’d say Italy. I went to Rome last December and fell in love with the place. The people, the history, the art, the food, the language. I’d love to see more of that country.
What is your opinion on ‘battle of the bands’ competitions?
They’re not for me. I think we can all co-exist without having to fight for a “top spot”.
What’s your best/worst experience at a gig?
Opening for John Parish last summer was a definite highlight. I’m a huge fan so it was an amazing treat!
Do you get nervous before a gig? How do you calm down?
I actually get more nervous before I sound check! I know that doesn’t make any sense but after that I get a feel for the stage and what the sound will be like and I tend to relax a bit.
Has your music been used on any film soundtracks?
Not yet! Fingers and legs crossed…
Is composing for film or tv something you’d like to get involved in if the opportunity came along?
Yes I’d love to! My dream project would be to write for a Tarantino film.
Is there anything you’d like to add?
Yes, Support Independent Music!!
Peace, Love & Riddim
