Argon 40

Fair Lawn

Hi guys, how are you?
Good, thanks.

Would you mind introducing us to your band members?
It’s just Heather and myself.

How long has the current band line up been together?
We started writing together a couple of years ago.

How did you meet each other?
We met through a mutual friend of ours, a drummer.

How did you come up with the band name?
I was reading something about the atmosphere of Venus and it mentioned argon 40.  Nothing sets a party off like a good isotope.

How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t yet heard you?
I would describe us as a funky, electronic, melodic, synthy, acoustic mess.

What music did you listen to while growing up?
I listened to everything, but probably started with rock music

What was the last music you put on your ipod or mp3 player?
Good Girls Go Bad by Cobra Starship

What is your current equipment?
An assortment of electric pianos, guitars, synths, softsynths, drum machines, and the usual software.

If you had an unlimited equipment budget what would be on your shopping list?
The Rolling Stones’ Mobile Studio circa 1971

How much involvement do you have with the arranging and production of the songs when recording?
It’s just the two of us

Is the production side of things something you’d like to get involved more in the future, maybe working with other artists?

Do you find the process of recording enjoyable and does it get easier the more you do?
I find it enjoyable and really rewarding.  The ease of recording varies from day to day.  Sometimes things come together really quickly, and other times it’s a long arduous process.

Do you have any new recordings planned.
It seems like we’re always working on something, so yes.

Which are your favourite original tracks?
If I had to pick one it would be “When the Words Don’t Come”.  It was probably the second thing we ever worked on and came together pretty quickly.

Do you have a set routine when writing and recording or does it depend on each track and the inspiration?
It varies, sometimes we just force ourselves to create something and other times one of us will have a germ of an idea or even the structure for almost a completed song.

Do you have a method for writing songs?
Probably music first, but not always.

Do you find song writing easy or difficult?
Depends on the day.

Which countries have you gigged in?

Which countries would be at the top of your list to tour?
Japan and the U.K.

Who would you like to tour with?
Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, Royksopp

What’s your best/worst experience at a gig?
Best would be playing in front of 60,000 people at the L.A. Coliseum.  Worst might be having someone throw mud into my guitar strings mid-solo.

Do you get nervous before a gig? How do you calm down?
I do.  The usual methods.

Has your music been used on any film soundtracks?
Both of our previous projects have been on soundtracks, but nothing yet with the new album.

Is composing for film or tv something you’d like to get involved in ?
Definitely. We’d love to write specifically for something.  We’re big fans of ambient music and how it sets a mood.
