Currently making waves on the National Music Scene, The Quails are the latest big musical export from the South West. The four-piece released their first album in 2009 and last summer they opened for Muse on the first night of their Resistance Tour, playedat The Bulldog Bash and supported The Kooks at the Eden Project among others. The Quails also featured in a BBC documentary about the Muse gig and they are confirmed to perform at the Relentless Boardmasters Festival in Newquay in August on the Vans stage, will headline at Namfest, Dorset alongside Toploader and will perform at Gold Coast Ocean Festival and Glastonbury Festival in June.
“The first time I saw this Indie rocking four-piece live, they blew all the other bands clean off the stage; tight, professional and oozing with energy, The Quails are the real deal”,
The Fly Magazine
Last year the band also played at festivals in Turkey and Jersey and headlined a number of smaller music festivals; they played on the Britbus in Bristol and for the Jack Wills sponsored varsity polo party in Windsor. A TV production company followed them to Turkey where they made a documentary about their invitation to play at an EU funded festival just 50 miles from the Iran/Iraq border. The documentary is currently being entered for national film festivals.
In March ‘10 The Quails ventured to the Alps to support Newton Faulkner at The Altitude Festival and will be playing at numerous festivals over the Summer including Reading, Beach Break Live, South Devon Festival supporting Will Young, Chagstock supporting The Hoosiers, Dartmouth after Ruby Turner, Ivy Live and Volksfest supporting The Undertones and an Academy tour is planned for the Autumn.
This release, their second album entitled ‘Master of Imperfection’ combines a darker, more sophisticated sound with the quirky, catchy tunes of the first album ‘I've Heard it's All Rumours’. Recorded at the atmospheric Sawmills studios on the River Fowey in Cornwall, the album is engineered by Tom Joyce and produced by Simon Honywill who is head of department for sound for The Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury and who describes the album as "absolute dynamite." It was mastered in Chagford by Simon Heyworth who started his illustrious career with the iconic Tubular Bells
The band is fronted by prolific and talented songwriter Dan Steer who has a distinctive and powerful voice and is a charismatic performer. Rhythm and energy is supplied by Sam Banks on bass and Chris Prentice on drums. Dan’s voice is instantly recognizable and Max Armstrong’s guitar riffs are mind blowing. He was recently described by his old tutor at the Exeter Academy of Music and Sound as the most gifted guitar student to pass through the college. Dan’s keyboard playing combines with good old rock guitar to create a perfect fusion of old and new. Topped off with sublime harmonies, it’s no wonder this band are attracting so much attention!
The Quails first single called Argentina will be released on the 17th of May accompanied by a Hitchcock – inspired black and white video filmed by Pangaea TV on a steam train. A six minute feature will go out on ITV Westcountry in April about the making of the video.
On May 8th, The Quails kick off a two week National tour from Cornwall to Glasgow. The first night takes place at the 1800 capacity Riviera International Centre in Torquay and tickets are already selling fast. This gig is supported by a major local PR campaign with features in all the local papers and constant coverage by Palm FM.
The band is sponsored by Studio 5 photography, Palm FM, Teign Music, RG Jones Sound Engineering, Faux Couture, the Academy of Music and Sound in Exeter, Pangaea, Faith and Adam Black Guitars.
"Marvellous, Fantastic, Sooper Dooper! 'I've Heard it's All Rumours' is by far one of the best examples of how to put your first album together. Nine tracks of belting anthems that put to shame many albums selling millions. Killers? Kaiser Chiefs? Behave... The Quails hold the answer to what makes a great Indie scene. Unlimited energy, intelligent songs and oodles of charm. Go hear this live before you're paying through the nose to see this band at Wembley….the perfect package. The quirky four piece storm the stage with their classic – rock-edged indie/pop tunes and cool shoes. Visually well-styled they are a record company’s dream and could easily be cut out and pasted onto a major festival stage”.
