but for those of you who want to play with images taken on your mobile phone or you're possibly not so impressed with the software that came with your digital camera or you just want to have a go at creating some digital art, here are some digital imaging software packages that don't break the bank.
If you try any of them, we'd love to see the results and maybe we can do a review of the software using your images as examples in the near future.

PC

Artweaver - Artweaver is a simple Freeware program for creative painting, i.e. Artweaver offers you all artistic effects which you need for your work.

Cinepaint - CinePaint is an open source painting program used by motion picture studios to retouch images in 35mm films. It was formerly called Film Gimp. It has been used in a dozen feature films including Harry Potter, Scooby-Doo, and the Fast & the Furious.

Gimp - GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

Paint.NET - Paint.NET is free image editing and photo manipulation software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins.

PhotoFiltre - PhotoFiltre is a free complete image retouching program. It allows you to do simple or advanced adjustments to an image and apply a vast range of filters on it. It is simple and intuitive to use, and has an easy learning curve.

MAC

Seashore - Seashore is an open source image editor for Mac OS X''s Cocoa framework. It features gradients, textures and anti-aliasing for both text and brush strokes. It supports multiple layers and alpha channel editing. It is based around the GIMP''s technology and uses the same native file format.

Gimp on OS X - Photo editing application that rivals Photoshop in features (requires X11).

Inkscape - Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, or Xara X using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format.

Imagetricks - Image Tricks is a free application for editing and generating images. It uses Mac OS X Core Image filters that transform pictures to unimaginable extent and apply advanced visual effects. The program can create unique artwork you may use as business card backgrounds, for web design, print materials and more.

Teal - Teal is an entry level image editing and painting package. Teal''s features include a variety of brushes (clone brush, smudge, effect brush, etc), non-contiguous constructive selections, and image-wide effects.
