Hi, how are you?
Would you mind introducing us to your band members?
Bal Cooke (drums/production), Robert Henderson (trumpet/ keys), Steven Westwater, (bass) Aly MacRae (guitar), Adam Wyroslawski (guitar). & myself Louise Quinn (voice/ guitar).
How long has the current band line up been together?
Less than a year.
How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t yet heard you?
What have you been up to recently?
Playing King Tuts in Glasgow & working on our latest album (The Beggar’s Opera) out 25th October.
What can your fans look forward to in the next 12 months?
The Beggar’s opera album & single Here’s To Us with amazing remixes by Celebrity Murder Party; Colin Waterson; Ban This Sick Filth & Copycat.
How did you meet each other?
It was written in the stars.
How did you come up with your name for the band?
It’s my name!
Did you always want to be in a band?
Yeah – I used to pray that I’d be in a band when I grew up & have a really cuddly cat. I got both. : )
What music did you listen to while growing up?
Punk & Christian folk.
How long have you been involved with writing & performing music?
Ever since I can remember.
What were your first music making experiences?
The Gambler by The Clash on a nylon string guitar.
Are you self-taught or did you have lessons?
I learned at Church & from my brother Shug but mainly self –taught.
What is your current equipment?
Drums/ bass/ laptop/ korg synth/ percussion/ guitar/ trumpet.
If you had an unlimited equipment budget what would be on your shopping list?
Stuff you can play with your mind.
Do you use the same equipment live as you do when in a studio?
Do you have a set routine when writing and recording or does it depend on each track and the inspiration?
Depends on the track but usually stick em down live then work around that…
Which software/recording process do you use?
Would you sign with a major record company?
Depends on the company.
Do you have any new recordings planned?
How much involvement do you have with the arranging and production of the songs when recording?
I’m there for the whole trip…
Is the production side of things something you’d like to get involved more in the future, maybe working with other artists?
Do you find the process of recording enjoyable and does it get easier the more you do?
Yeah but it’s always easier to start stuff than it is to finish it.
Do you try to capture your ‘live’ sound on recordings or do you think that the ‘live’ sound and recorded sound should be different experiences for your fans?
The new album is pretty live sounding but it evolved from a live stage show…
Do you any favourite tracks from your album?
I like em all but in particular Here’s To Us, He’s A Dog & Wolf Cries Boy.
Who are the main songwriters for the band?
Do you have a method for writing songs?
These songs were written for Vanishing Point’s theatre production so they were inspired by the text & characters in John Gay’s 18th Century play The Beggar’s Opera and the world in which it was set which director Matt Lenton created.
Do you write songs only about personal experiences?
No but it informs most stuff I think.
Do you find song writing easy or difficult?
Don’t want to jinx wherever it comes from but I find it flows…
Is there anyone who you would like to collaborate with on writing songs or performing?
Remixers of the single Celebrity Murder Party & Colin Waterson.
Who are your favourite songwriters?
Lou Reed, Joni Mitchell, Cole Porter, Chin & Chapmen, Johnny Cash, Bowie & Lennon.
Which countries have you gigged in?
Scotland, England & Serbia.
Which countries would be at the top of your list to tour?
Brazil, US, China & Spain.
Who would you like to tour with?
The Chuckle Brothers.
How do you promote your music and get your music out to new fans?
Lot of social networking - Facebook, Twitter, MySpace. Press & radio.

Do you think such sites and the internet are good tools for independent and unsigned artists?
With all the various websites out there for independent and unsigned artists, is there still something that is missing from them that you think would benefit the lesser-known artists?
Itunes Ping sounds good if it works…
How do you relax?
Watch True Blood, drink red wine laugh at Bal’s impressions of being a vampire…
Have you ever entered any ‘battle of the bands’ competitions?
One ages ago and one of the judges was Dot Allison from One Dove… she was lovely & came after & spoke to me after said she thought we were great – made my year!
What's your best/worst experience at a gig?
A community event where the audience consisted of the fire brigade & a lot of people in electric wheel chairs & Roberts synths started interfering with the electronics in the wheel chairs…
Do you get nervous before a gig? How do you calm down?
Yeah. I jump up and down and talk too much…
What are your day jobs if you have them?
Acting/ Singing/Songwriting in schools & the community.
Would you like to be full time working musicians or are you happy with things as they are?
I am grateful for any work I get & I love it all but it would be great to do band stuff for a few years solid & then check into rehab.
Has your music been used on any film soundtracks?
Yeah we’ve had stuff on films by award winning directors Penny Woolcock, David McKenzie & CSI star Enrique Murciano’s film Mancora. We have three tracks on forthcoming film Fast Romance which is great new Scottish rom-com in the mold of Gregory’s Girl.
Is composing for film or tv something you’d like to get involved in if the opportunity came along?
Like yeaaaaah !
